Yeah. You read that one right. WordPress.com. Yeah, that hosted version of wordpress that limits you so much. But, hold on. There are reasons why you should consider it for your next website, or blog, or whatever.
You see, everybody (especially in India) loves blogger.com over wordpress.com. And, personally, I find that alright because blogger is also free to use but gives you more power and flexibility over your blog.
But, as they say, with great powers comes great responsibility.
Yes, that is true.
I can say that wordpress.com is better because it keeps on updating itself and keeps itself fresh whereas blogger.com may not have been updated since 2012 (or somewhat later) when they announced google+ comments.
So, with that in mind, let’s get down to the points where you might like (or love) wordpress.com.
#1: WHEN YOU DON’T WANT TO GET INTO THE HOSTING HASSLES
Yes, believe me, I’ve made websites for clients.
And, many a time I’ve come into the trouble that they already own the domain, or the hosting, template, etc.
No, I’m not saying you should make your client’s site on wordpress.com, but if the site is just for you and/or a team, the solution is a perfect fit.
No hosting/dns problems to handle, just plain simple amazing blogging experience.
#2: WHEN YOU WANT SAFETY
I started a blog back in the beginning of 2013. it ran good, but only for 3 months.
Soon after, the site got hacked and no matter how hard I tried, the site wouldn’t come back to normal.
But, here, the site has been running for almost 10 months, and so far, I’ve encountered zero errors with hosting and safety.
Yes, hands down, no problems.
And, that is maybe because it is handled with great security at a very high scale.
#3: WHEN YOU JUST WANT TO BLOG
Yes, I still believe that wordpress.com is not a solution for web apps or big media companies, but it still is a great solution for individuals or small teams who want a blog.
The software is great, they give you enough space to get started with, they even give you the access to video hosting for a nominal fee.
#4: WHEN YOU WANT TO SCALE
Let’s say over time (or maybe overnight), your blog became famous. You started becoming known, your posts got shared a lot more, you got a lot of comments.
But, suddenly, you come to know that your hosting plan has reached it’s limits and you either need to pay them more or leave your blog (which you would not like to do).
But, on wordpress.com, that is not a problem. They give you unlimited bandwidth (seriously), with zero downtime (well, I have never experienced any) and that too, all for free !
Hey, can I ask you for something. Would you love to get articles like these delivered to your email ? Well, now you know what to do.
#5: WHEN YOU JUST WANT TO TEST THE WATER
Sometimes, not everybody is ready to spend a $100 on a blog which might or might not be successful.
And, that’s why I guess, these blogging services like tumblr, blogger, etc. are running smoothly.
So, yeah, go ahead, and try blogging for a while, and see if it suits you. And, no worries, as if you don’t like it you can leave it as per your need.
NOW, DOWN TO WHY YOU SHOULD NOT USE WORDPRESS.COM
Yes, there may be a ton of situations where you would not want to use wordpress.com at all, no matter the costs. And, I try to enlist some of those here:-
#1: YOU WANT TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL
Hands down, until you pay them enough, wordpress.com is not the place for professional businessmen or bloggers.
That is so, because, there are many restrictions as per what you can do on wordpress.com. Limited themes, plugins or custom coding.
And, that is what professionals need. So, that is why, you might not want to use wordpress.com if you are a professional.
#2: WHEN YOU’RE MAKING SITE FOR A CLIENT
When a client is paying some amount to make his website, he/she would not expect a free blogging solution that has been stuck onto them with a free theme.
Instead, what they do want is a proper labelled website with complete control and functionality. They’re not fools, so don’t treat them as such. They deserve much more than a blog at a hosted blogging solution.
#3: WHEN YOU WANT TO GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY (AND MAYBE GET SOME EXPERIENCE :) )
There are many people that I know of that want to get their hands dirty and that is why they host their site on their own.
And, to be honest, I was one of them in the beginning, You know, trying to learn as much as possible by making mistakes and then searching all night for solutions.
So, these are the reasons you might not want to try wordpress.com
So these are the points that I think are valid when a person is deciding whether or not to use a hosted solution like wordpress.com.
But, I also think that you have a very strong point of your own. So, please do not hesitate to drop those in the comments below.
Thanks, and I hope this helped you take a better decision.
